Business Description
Vulcan Materials Company and its subsidiaries are principally engaged in the production, distribution and sale of construction materials (Construction Materials) and chloralkali and other industrial chemicals (Chemicals). Construction Materials and Chemicals are both reported as segments. Vulcan is a producer of construction aggregates, asphalt and ready-mixed concrete, and a chemicals producer, producing chloralkali and other industrial chemicals. Its Construction Materials business consists of the production, distribution and sale of construction aggregates and other construction materials and related services. In 2003, the Chemicals segment was organized into two business units: Chloralkali, operating under the Vulcan Chemicals name, managed its line of chloralkali products and related businesses and Performance Chemicals, operating under the Vulcan Performance Chemicals name, managed its specialty chemicals and services business.

Financial Information
For the nine months ended 9/30/04, sales rose 7% to $2.32 billion. Net income from continuing operations before acct. change rose 25% to $202.7 million. Revenues benefitted from higher prices and improved demand. Earnings also reflect improved margins, and a reduction in interest expense.
