Unitrin Inc. is engaged in providing property and casualty insurance, life and health insurance, and consumer finance services primarily to individuals, families and small businesses. The Company conducts its operations through six operating segments: Multi Lines Insurance, Specialty Lines Insurance, Kemper Auto and Home, Unitrin Direct, Life and Health Insurance and Consumer Finance. The Unitrin companies operating in these segments provide automobile, homeowners, commercial multi-peril, motorcycle, boat and watercraft, fire, casualty, workers compensation and other types of property and casualty insurance to individuals and businesses. Automobile insurance accounted for 56% of Unitrin's consolidated insurance premiums earned for 2003.

Financial Information
For the nine months ended 9/30/04, total revenues increased 4% to $2.28 billion. Net income totalled $166.9 million, up from $79.2 million. Revenues reflect increased premium rates, and higher net realized investment gains. Earnings also benefitted from a decrease in insurance expenses, and a decrease in policyholders' benefits.
