Thermo Electron Corporation is engaged in the development, manufacture and sale of technology-based instrument systems, components and solutions used in virtually every industry to monitor, collect and analyze data to provide knowledge for the user. The Company's business is divided into three principal sectors: Life Sciences, Optical Technologies, and Measurement and Control. The Company serves the biotechnology and pharmaceutical markets, as well as the clinical laboratory and healthcare industries, through its Life Sciences sector. The Optical Technologies segment produces optical and semiconductor equipment systems and technologies that control and apply light throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. The Measurement and Control segment provides a range of real-time, on-line sensors, monitors and control systems.
TMO provides technology-based instruments, systems, and components that offer solutions for markets ranging from life sciences to telecommunications to food, drug and beverage production. For the 26 weeks ended 6/29/02, revenues fell 10% to $1.00 billion. Net income from continuing operations before extraordinary item and accntg. change rose from $31.2 million to $113.9 million. Results reflect sales declines at Measurement and Control, offset by $94 million in gains on the sale of investments.
