Business Description
Sunoco, Inc. is principally a petroleum refiner and marketer and chemicals manufacturer with interests in cokemaking. The Company's operations are organized into five business units: Refining and Supply, Retail Marketing, Chemicals, Logistics and Coke. The Refining and Supply business consists of the manufacture of petroleum products, including gasoline, middle distillates, such as jet fuel, heating oil and diesel fuel, and residual fuel. The Retail Marketing business consists of the retail sale of gasoline and middle distillates and the operation of convenience stores in 21 states. The Chemicals business comprises the manufacturing, distribution and marketing of commodity and intermediate petrochemicals. The Logistics business operates refined product and crude oil pipelines. Sun Coke Company's business consists of blast-furnace coke manufacturing, and metallurgical coal production from mines in Virginia.

SUN, through its subsidiaries, is a petroleum refiner and marketer with interests in cokemaking and coal mining. Sunoco's petroleum refining and marketing operations are conducted in the eastern half of the U.S. For the six months ended 6/30/02, revenues fell 14% to $6.49 billion. Net loss totalled $96 million vs. an income of $302 million. Results reflect significantly lower refined product sales prices and higher consumer excise taxes cost.
