Business Description
Massey Energy Company produces, processes and sells bituminous, low sulfur coal of steam and metallurgical grades through its 19 processing and shipping centers, called resource groups, many of which receive coal from multiple coal mines. The Company's resource groups or mining complexes blend, process and ship coal that is produced from one or more mines, with a single complex handling the coal production of as many as eight distinct underground or surface mines. These mines have been developed at strategic locations in close proximity to the Massey preparation plants and rail shipping facilities. Coal is transported from its mining complexes to customers by means of railroad cars or trucks. Massey operates 30 underground mines and 13 surface mines in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia. The Company's steam coal is primarily purchased by utilities and industrial clients as fuel for power plants.
