Business Description
Lee Enterprises, Incorporated, directly, and through its ownership of associated companies, publishes 44 daily newspapers in 18 states and nearly 200 weekly, classified and specialty publications, along with associated online services. More than 70% of its revenue is derived from advertising. After advertising, circulation is its largest source of revenue. For the fiscal year ended September 30, 2003 (fiscal 2003), daily circulation of newspapers owned in both 2003 and 2002, as measured by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, decreased 0.1% and Sunday circulation increased 0.3%. The Company's online activities are comprised of Websites supporting each of its daily newspapers and certain of its other publications. Lee also owns 81% of an Internet service company (Townnews.com), which provides Web infrastructure for more than 800 small daily and weekly newspapers and shoppers. Lee also offers commercial printing services.

Financial Information
For the fiscal year ended 9/30/04, revenues rose 6% to $683.3M. Net income from continuing operations rose 11% to $86.5 million. Revenues reflect increasing readership and circulation. Net income also reflects an increased absorption of compensation expenses.
