Business Description
The Kroger Co. operates retail food and drug stores, multi-department stores, jewelry stores and convenience stores in the Midwest, South and West. The Company also manufactures and processes food for sale in its supermarkets. As of January 31, 2004, Kroger operated, either directly or through its subsidiaries, 2,532 supermarkets. Approximately 30% of these supermarkets operated in Company-owned facilities. During the fiscal year ended January 31, 2004, 466 of these supermarkets had fuel centers. Supermarkets are generally operated under one of the following formats: combination food and drug stores (combo stores), multi-department stores or price impact warehouse stores.

Financial Information
For the 28 weeks ended 8/14/04, sales increased 4% to $29.89 billion. Net income decreased 25% to $405 million. Revenues reflect higher comparable food store sales and the opening of new stores. Earnings were offset by higher operating expenses as a percentage of sales.
