Corning Incorporated is a global, technology-based corporation that operates in two reportable business segments: Telecommunications and Technologies. The Telecommunications Segment produces optical fiber and cable, and hardware and equipment products for the worldwide telecommunications industry. The segment represented approximately 46% of the Company's sales during the year ended December 31, 2003. The Technologies Segment manufactures specialized products with properties for customer applications utilizing glass, glass ceramic and polymer technologies. Its products include liquid crystal display glass for flat panel displays, environmental products, life science products, specialty materials products, and glass panels and funnels for televisions. The Technologies Segment represented approximately 53% of Corning's sales during 2003.
Financial Information
For the nine months ended 9/04, revenues rose 24% to $2.82 billion. Net loss from continuing operations totaled $2.35 billion, up from $194 million. Results reflect the continued growth in the Display Technologies segment and stronger than expected sales in the Telecommunication segment; offset by a $1.79 billion restructuring, impairment and other charges.
