Genzyme General Division is a division of Genzyme Corporation, a biotechnology and human healthcare company that develops products and provides services for unmet medical needs. Genzyme General develops and markets therapeutic products and diagnostic products and services with an emphasis on genetic disorders and other chronic debilitating diseases with well-defined patient populations. The Company is organized into two segments, Therapeutics, which focuses on developing and marketing products for genetic diseases and other chronic debilitating diseases, including a family of diseases known as lysosomal storage disorders, and specialty therapeutics, and Diagnostic Products, which develops, markets and distributes in vitro diagnostic products. The Company also operates a wholly owned subsidiary, GelTex Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which Genzyme General acquired in December 2000.

GENZ develops and markets therapeutic products and diagnostic products and services, with an emphasis on therapies for genetic diseases. For the six months ended 6/30/02, revenues rose 10% to $509.3 million. Net income before accounting change increased 13% to $80.4 million. Revenues reflect higher sales of Cerezyme enzyme replacement therapy for Gaucher disease and sales growth of Renagel. Net income also reflects the absence of a $8.8 million in-process R&D charge. ing margins.
