Business Description
Barnes & Noble, Inc. sells trade books of hardcover and paperback consumer titles (excluding educational textbooks and specialized religious titles); mass-market paperbacks such as mystery, romance, science fiction and other fictions; and children's books, bargain books, magazines and music. During the fiscal year ended January 31, 2004 (fiscal 2003), the Company operations in 842 bookstores, of which 647 operated under the Barnes & Noble Booksellers trade name (31 of which were opened in fiscal 2003) and 195 operated under the B. Dalton Bookseller trade name. Barnes & Noble also sells books on the Internet and video game and entertainment software through GameStop Corp. GameStop operates 1,514 video game and entertainment software stores under the GameStop trade name and publishes Game Informer, a multi-platform video game magazine. In addition, the Company owns Sterling Publishing Co., Inc., a publisher of how-to books.
Financial Information
For the 39 weeks ended 10/30/04, revenues rose 16% to $4.33 billion. Net income rose 28% to $28 million. Revenues reflect the opening of new book stores and new GameStop stores. Net income also reflects improved gross margins and absence of a $14.3M equity in loss.
